12 runner breakfast ideas, sorted by how they actually sit

Every breakfast list I found was sorted best to worst. As if there's one right breakfast and the rest are compromises.

That's not how it works when you're training. The right breakfast on a rest morning is the wrong one an hour before a session. It's not about good or bad. It's about how it sits.

So I sorted these twelve from lightest to heaviest instead. Fat, fiber and protein are what make a meal hang around, so the top of the list clears out fast and the bottom sticks with you. Number one isn't better than number twelve. They're different tools. And no clock times here: meals leave the stomach at their own speed, so a fixed countdown is wrong for somebody.

One more thing. There's a real pull in this sport toward eating less at breakfast, and the lightest things on this list pull hardest. If you're grabbing number one out of habit on a training morning, that's worth noticing.

The twelve

1. Strawberry banana smoothie, two ingredients and no, really, two.

A tall glass of pale pink strawberry banana smoothie on a white marble counter, frozen strawberries and a whole banana beside it, condensation running down the glass, soft morning light from one side.

Frozen strawberries and bananas, blended with water and ice. That's it. The lightest thing here, because there's no added fat in it anywhere.

2. Three-ingredient banana pancakes.

A stack of small golden banana pancakes on a pale ceramic plate, syrup running down the side, sliced banana on top, a fork resting on the plate on a linen cloth in morning light.

Bananas, eggs and flour. The eggs do more than they look like they do. Add the optional hemp or flax and this moves several places down the list.

3. Overnight oats, the plain honest version.

A glass jar of overnight oats on a pale wooden surface, creamy oats layered under fresh blueberries and sliced banana, a spoon resting against the jar, morning light from one side.

Oats, milk, a spoonful of maple syrup, left in the fridge overnight. The toppings are where it gets heavier, so the plain jar and the loaded one are really two different breakfasts.

4. Heat and eat oatmeal, the freezer version.

Portioned discs of cooked oatmeal with dried cranberries and sliced almonds on a sheet of parchment, one in a bowl behind with a spoon, on a pale marble counter.

You cook a batch, freeze it in portions, and reheat one on the morning. Heads up: a serving is two of the pucks.

5. Blueberry baked oatmeal.

A square of baked oatmeal studded with blueberries lifted from a ceramic baking dish, pecans on top, golden and set, on a weathered wood table with a linen napkin.

Bakes in about forty minutes and feeds you for most of a week. Pecans and butter put real fat in it, so it sits lower here than the overnight oats do.

6. Oatmeal pancakes, no flour at all.

Three thick oatmeal pancakes stacked on a speckled ceramic plate, fresh berries scattered over the top and maple syrup running down the stack, on pale linen by a bright window.

The whole batter goes in the blender, oats and all. Greek yogurt and an egg give it staying power. A weekend one for me.

7. Savory oatmeal with chili crisp.

A wide shallow bowl of creamy savory steel-cut oatmeal topped with wilted Swiss chard, sliced scallions and a spoonful of dark red chili crisp, on a pale stone surface with chopsticks resting alongside.

Steel-cut oats in miso broth with chard and chili crisp. If you've never had oats savory, this is the one that converts people.

8. Make-ahead seeded oats.

Four glass jars of seeded overnight oats in a row on a pale counter, visible flax, hemp and chia through the glass, one jar topped with fresh raspberries, soft side light.

Flax, hemp and chia all in one jar. Same oats as number three, and it sits completely differently because of what got stirred in.

9. Protein pancakes.

A tall stack of golden pancakes on a cream plate, sliced banana and a drizzle of maple syrup over the top, a glass of milk behind, on a warm wooden table in morning light.

Milk, banana, eggs, Greek yogurt and protein powder in one batter. They freeze well. A rest-day one for me, or for a morning with nothing in front of it.

10. Chickpea pancakes, which sound wrong and aren't.

Golden chickpea pancakes stacked on a rustic ceramic plate, a pat of butter melting on top, fresh strawberries and blueberries scattered beside them, on rumpled linen.

A whole can of chickpeas goes in the blender with oats and eggs and comes out as pancakes. I didn't believe it either. Fifteen minutes, and there's a savory version with a fried egg on top.

11. Southwest tofu scramble.

A cast iron skillet of crumbled golden tofu scramble with red bell pepper and dark kale, salsa spooned over one side, cilantro scattered on top, a fork resting in the pan, on a weathered wood surface.

Crumbled tofu, red pepper and kale with a five-ingredient sauce. One thing though: as written there's almost no carbohydrate in it. The potatoes and toast on the recipe's serving list are the other half of the meal.

12. Scrambled tofu breakfast burrito.

A halved breakfast burrito on parchment showing tofu scramble, roasted potato, red pepper and avocado inside, salsa in a small bowl beside it, on a pale stone counter.

Same scramble as eleven, but the potatoes and the tortilla are in it. That's the fix. Makes four, wraps in foil, freezes.

How I picked these

Recipe first, always. Every link goes to a real post by a real person who developed and tested it. Seven blogs, no more than two from any one. The recipes are theirs. The order and the commentary are mine.

The one question I won't answer

How much should you eat? That's literally what Idunia is for. Lighter and plainer sits easier close to a run, heavier and richer wants more room, and your own line is something training runs teach you.

Built around eating enough.

Idunia tracks whether you are eating enough for the training you do.
